Barley OakAsk me what I’m doing Friday night, somewhere in the timeframe between 6 and 9, and my response will be, “that is our date night.” Each Friday night, hubby and I head out for a couple of hours on our self-proclaimed “date night.” We have been doing this for about 4 years now and just love it. We do not sit down at a table for a meal, but always sit at the bar and order food and drinks. We try and stay in the West St. Tammany area: Mandeville, Madisonville, Covington and Abita Springs as we usually have to shuffle kids around.

Below is a list of some of our fave stops:

Bistro Byronz: A hop, slip and a jump from our house with consistently good drinks, great bar service and great food. There is limited bar seating available, but we usually get lucky!

Old Rail Brewing Company: We both love beer and this place never disappoints. If we are lucky, Dean is there serving us. The food is always fantastic and the bar is huge and a central part of this establishment.

Copeland’s Covington: They have a good sized bar and lots of high tops. They have a huge menu, which hubby likes and this is one of hubby’s top picks, especially if we get there by happy hour.

Bosco’s Mandeville: Always great food and a large bottled beer selection with this large bar. Crawfish King Cake is a meal:)

Abita Brew Pub: Love the activity of the bar in front. Food is good and yep – huge selection of Abita beer on tap. And for fun – they will mix them for you.

Garcia’s Covington: Best Margaritas around, super service and the food is always great!

Don’s Seafood: This may be a new favorite with their open large bar, large menu and great drink prices. Went there for crawfish a couple of Fridays ago and also hit happy hour – bonus!

Morton’s Seafood in Madisonville: LOVE their large open bar, plenty of seats.

Nuvolari’s: A beautiful bar, with great drinks and food. Not as casual as hubby often likes to be after a week of work, but we both like it.

The Barley Oak: This is not really one of our dining spots, but I’ll always stop there for the cheese plate, pretzels and for a beer. If you can get a spot on the porch at sunset, it is spectacular. The couch area is fun too.

George’s: This place also has limited bar seating, but we can get lucky there if go early enough. We like everything about this place.

La Carreta: Friday night is usually a madhouse, but sometimes we get a high top at the bar or a stool. Margaritas are great and the food is pretty good too.

Wow – I realized I have not written a post about eating and drinking locally, since 2010!
