<g:plusone size="small" count="1" href="http://www.kissmygumbo.com/2011/05/18/louisiana-veterans-help-stop-budget-cuts/"></g:plusone>

When I got wind of the potential budget cut in Louisianan that would directly impact our Veterans and their families, I was very upset. Yes, times are tight and budgets need to be cut, that is understandable. There is so much pork spending out there that needs to go away. But, when it comes to our very patriotic state with 304,889 veterans who have served honorably and selflessly, this is where budget cuts need to draw the line. They have made brave sacrifices and are entitled to services above and beyond the average citizen (in my honest opinion). Not only will this impact the veterans of today, but those from previous generations that honorably served. I am also very concerned about the mental and physical well-being of today’s returning war heroes and believe cutting any service that may potentially help them is unjust.

Fact: May 17th House Bill 1 (HB1) was passed by the House Appropriations Committee and in it was a cut of $932,124 for the LDVA
Fact: Earlier in the year the LDVA reduced its’ budget from $7,780,946 to $5,471,734, a reduction of $2,309,212
Fact: Department’s overall budget calls for a modest increase, up from $49,760,550 to $53,879,388. This is due to increases in Federal and Self-Generated funds secured by the Department through a strategic plan which was successfully implemented in 2008.
Fact: If the revisions are accepted $932,124 will be cut
Fact: Veterans Service Offices are in place to assist veterans in getting the services they are entitled to, including: getting help with bills, long term care solutions, and navigating the health and mental health VA system and alternate resources.
Fact: If HB1 passes, 22 Veterans Parish Service Offices would be closed, with a direct impact on 30,734 Louisiana Veterans and their families: Allen, Beauregard, Bienville, Cameron, Catahoula, Desoto, East Carroll, Grant, Jackson, LaSalle, Plaquemines, Pointe Coupee, Red River, Richard, St. Charles, St. Helena, St. James, St. Martin, Tensas, Union, West Baton Rouge, and West Carroll.
Fact: If HB1 passes it would delay the opening of the CENLA Veterans Cemetery in Leesville
Fact: If HB1 passes burial operations at its NWLA Veterans Cemetery in Keithville would cease.
Fact: If HB1 passes the Louisiana Veterans Honor Medal program would shut down

Call to action: Secretary of the LDVA, Lane Carson is encouraging all Louisiana Veterans and their supporters to contact their area Legislators and voice their opposition to the revisions passed by the House Appropriations Committee.

From Butch O’Hare’s Medal Of Honor citation:

The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Lieutenant Edward Henry “Butch” O’Hare (NSN: 0-78672), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in aerial combat, at grave risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, as section leader and pilot of Fighting Squadron Three (VF-3), attached to the U.S.S. LEXINGTON, on 20 February 1942. Having lost the assistance of his teammates, Lieutenant O’Hare interposed his plane between his ship and an advancing enemy formation of nine attacking twin-engine heavy bombers. Without hesitation, alone and unaided, he repeatedly attacked this enemy formation, at close range in the face of intense combined machinegun and cannon fire. Despite this concentrated opposition, Lieutenant O’Hare, by his gallant and courageous action, his extremely skillful marksmanship in making the most of every shot of his limited amount of ammunition, shot down five enemy bombers and severely damaged a sixth before they reached the bomb release point. As a result of his gallant action–one of the most daring, if not the most daring, single action in the history of combat aviation–he undoubtedly saved his carrier from serious damage.

The U.S. Navy’s first Flying Ace. Awarded the Medal Of Honor, Navy Cross, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses & the Purple Heart. An airport and a Navy destroyer named after him. And a connection to Al Capone. You can read much more about Lt. Cmd. O’Hare here.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.

Cpl. Hernandez, a member of Company G, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. On May 31, 1951 near Wontong-ni, Korea his platoon, in defensive positions on Hill 420, came under ruthless attack by a numerically superior and fanatical hostile force, accompanied by heavy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire which inflicted numerous casualties on the platoon.

His comrades were forced to withdraw due to lack of ammunition but Cpl. Hernandez, although wounded in an exchange of grenades, continued to deliver deadly fire into the ranks of the onrushing assailants until a ruptured cartridge rendered his rifle inoperative. Immediately leaving his position, Cpl. Hernandez rushed the enemy armed only with rifle and bayonet. Fearlessly engaging the foe, he killed 6 of the enemy before falling unconscious from grenade, bayonet, and bullet wounds but his heroic action momentarily halted the enemy advance and enabled his unit to counterattack and retake the lost ground. For his actions on that day, Cpl. Hernandez was awarded the distinguished Medal Of Honor on April 21, 1952. The indomitable fighting spirit, outstanding courage, and tenacious devotion to duty clearly demonstrated by Cpl. Hernandez reflect the highest credit upon himself, the infantry, and the U.S. Army.

I can’t cook to save my life, I can kill a cactus (done it) and I spent the fist 22 years of my life North of the Mason Dixon Line. My brother-in-law bought me a subscription for several years, and well…though a fine publication, it was soooo out of my league.

Well….as of yesterday it happened. Greta and Southern Living came together. Heck, the Saints won the Superbowl…miracles can happen! There was a tweet put out from @Southern_Living saying, “We’re looking for a Southern mom blogger who writes about being part of a military family.” @aafromaaa put my name in the tweet and it just took off like wildfire. Nobody knew what it was for, but my name kept getting retweeted and I was truly overwhelmed with all the Twitter love.

After working out this morning, I see an email from Southern Living asking for a picture as the article was almost done and would be up in a bit. Whoooa very cool. As soon as I sent the picture, the post was up and I am just “tickled (or insert favorite Southern expression here)” with it. Glad this article brought a little attention to the on-line military community and #militarymon.

My friend Nikki left this on my Facebook wall,

“Greta you are one carpetbagger that we southern born types will always accept as one of ours… = )

You see, Jack recently celebrated his 10th birthday, and he did something very cool for a very good cause. He broke the world record for wearing the most pairs of underwear. 215 in fact. But why did he do this? To help raise money for Sgt. Eddie Ryan, a marine who was injured in Iraq five years ago. Now, think back to when you were 10 years old. How many of us could say that they would have forwent birthday presents to raise money for a good cause? I don’t think I would have. Jack Singer is, hands down, one of the coolest kids on the planet and I’m proud to honor him.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Keith Dewayne Andrews, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action during the ground assault of Operation DESERT STORM. Sergeant Andrews showed extraordinary courage once he observed that air support had by-passed two Iraqi machine gun positions, leaving a Humvee with five soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division pinned down by enemy cross fire. Sergeant Andrews negotiated a minefield while fighting his way to the top of the enemy bunker, destroying it with a fragmentation hand grenade. Being out of ammo, Sergeant Andrews resourcefully obtained the enemy machine gun using it to fight his way up the second Iraqi fighting position. Over all, Sergeant Andrews single-handedly killed some twenty-five enemy combatants to secure two enemy bunkers. This allowed for the quick evacuation of the five wounded soldiers thus saving their lives. These brave and selfless actions of Sergeant Andrews bring great credit to himself, his unit and the United States Army.
